Happy New Year!

Champagne
Friends and Family, here is to hoping 2008 brings you greater health, happiness and wishes come true!

I leave you with an Irish Prayer!
May those who love us, love us,
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts;
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles,
So we'll know them by their limping.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All about the music . . .

hotel california

I have been missing from my blog posting lately because I have been downloading music. Lots and lots of music. I received an MP3 player for Christmas and I am having a ball! I am old school...seriously...old school...I have not upgraded to an iPod or MP3, I just have my CD player, while I know that's the way of the world. Well, now I am with it. BUT with that comes all the downloading of music. Hello?.....learning curve here for the old girl! I call in my sons the "experts" in this area...well, they don't really want to show me where they get their "free" music...I guess they don't want Mom go to the stolen cyber music jail (wherever that may be). So I have done what I can figure out..which is copying music from my CD's to the MP3. Picture this...a stack of 300 plus CD's stacked high next to my harddrive as I meticulously review each CD for the songs I want to transfer to the player. YES! very time consuming, but I am having a blast with it. I am rediscovering that my range of musical preferences is QUITE diverse. I have gone through a number of music phases over the past 40 plus years, my R&B phase with CD's of The Supremes, Box Tops, Temptations, George Benson, Luther VanDross..my 80's bands phase with Bryan Adams, Loverboy, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Steve Miller Band, The Police, Bruce Springsteen. The Strong women singer phase with Sheryl Crow, Melissa Ethridge, Barbra Streisand, Anita Baker, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner...Then there has been my country phase that all started with Garth Brooks..never liked country until him..so we now have Alan Jackson, John Michael Montgomery, Clint Black, Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn with of course my music standbys that are timeless - the Beatles, The Jackson Five, The Eagles, Bread, Billy Joel, Lionel Richie...And lately I have been enjoying some of the newer music by Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Maroon 5, Linkin Park and the list goes on, like I said 300+ CD's. So as I review each CD carefully to pick what songs get to be transferred to my MP3, it brings back lots memories of when I first heard the song, or bought the CD. Now my husband says..."So are you going to get rid of all these CD's now?".......Well, HECK NO!! They can go in the closet right next to my 200+ vinyl albums and 45's that I don't have the heart to get rid of yet!

Beavers Win Emerald Bowl!

osu beavers

Congrats to the Beavs who finished the season with a win at the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco! It wasn't pretty, but a wins a win! Kudos! to Blake & Diane for hosting a FABULOUS bowl party!! Lots of famous burgers, cheezzy taters, chili, pasta salad, spinach dip, cake...uh..too darn much food as usual. Oh yeah! and SWEET win by the TRAILBLAZERS (12 IN A ROW) after the bowl game to make for a fantastic Oregon sports day!! woohoooo!! See you next season Beaver Nation!

Amazing . . . .

Today I was witness first hand to an ultrasound of the newest Christopherson in the oven. Danielle and Josh asked me to come along for their appt. today to learn the sex of their baby. It's so different now than when I had kids (you know in the olden days!). Everybody gets ultrasounds and most all of the parents want to learn the gender of their baby. What they can show you on the images is amazing. We saw the babys hands, fingers, legs, feet, toes, kidneys, stomach, diaphram, eyes, tongue, brain, heart (all four chambers beating and the valves working away) it's unbelievable! Baby is very active and is 17 centimeters in length. Any crazed abortion activist that says an 18 week old fetus is not a person, doesn't have a clue as to what they are talking about. We saw a person today, a beautiful baby BOY!! boy Yes, another grandson, who proudly displayed his "business" for us, we are all very excited and happy for him to appear around May 28th.

Time for bed . . .

What a WONDERFUL Christmas Day! Too much food..lots of laughs and great gifts shared with each other. Getting them to all sit still for a picture was a Christmas miracle! Calls from Chad & Nicole in Phoenix, Petri's in Hillsboro and brother Brian in China helped in making our day great. We even had a great weather surprise with snowfall on Christmas day! Now that hasn't happened for a long time. Another Christmas gone by and now it's off to bed I'm getting up early tomorrow and catching the big sales for Christmas lights, wrapping paper, ornaments, etc. Need to stock up for next year when there will be two grandbabies to wrap presents for..yippeeee!!

On your 29th Birthday . . . .

Happy Birthday!!!! Hope it's a good one . . . . Here is a little Chad trivia!

  • We came home from the hospital on Christmas Day in 1978 (you were our best present ever!)

  • Had the measles in December of 79, it was not a fun Christmas that year. Then in April of 80 you fell off of our back deck and landed on your right arm. It was broken and had to wear a mini cast on your arm for 6 weeks.

  • First tooth popped out on August 7, 1979.

  • First words were "da-da-da-da-da", Your first sentence was "I'll do it!"

  • First girlfriends name (age 2) was Stephanie, you always played together at the babysitters.

  • The most frequently written comment on report cards, " Chad is very social, we are working on not visiting during worktime".

  • Chad was sooo excited when Josh and Andy were born. He would want to carry them around the house all the time. Except on the day we brought Josh home from the hospital and family & friends were holding him and saying how cute and BIG he was. Chad had been successfully potty trained for a couple of months before this and he decided to stand in the middle of the living room and proudly pee his pants in front of everybody! Attempting to take attention away from the new baby in the house (his mission was accomplished)! So after a stern talking to and a little butt swat it was back to the drawing board on the potty training. Lesson learned: I'm not the complete center of attention anymore and peeing my pants is not going to change that!

  • S0 on this 29th BIRTHDAY . . . may you get the attention you deserve!!

WE LOVE YOU!!! A little Saturday morning favorite...maybe Lucas will enjoy too!

First Day of Winter Break . . . .

Yes....I am one of those damn people you hate this time of year. A person who works for the school district and gets the next two weeks off. Not like I really will or anything, since we have events during break I'll still be in and out a bit, but not much if I can help it! Even my husband is grumpy with me this morning. "Oh, yeah..that's right..YOU don't have to go to work today...hhmmmppfff"..as he stomps out the door. OH Well...so my plan is to start from one end of the house to the other and clean, clean, clean. We have the whole family here on Christmas day so this is the calm before the storm. I also need to get started on all my grocery shopping too. SOOO.. I have got lots do to....so here I am on the computer, reading, writing, surfing, stalling...OK..no I really have to go. Well in just one more minute or so.

Their baaaaaaccckkkk . . . .

It's winter break and in come some of our former graduates that are now college freshman home for winter break.
"Mrs. C., college is GREAT! but I sure miss this office", "This high school was lame...college is soo much more fun, but it's good to be back and see everybody..hey can we use the weight room?" (hmmm..now you want something?), "Guess what, Ms. C. . . . I have a new girlfriend, she's from Montana, here's her picture..yeah, I've been calling her since she's back there now, she's pretty cool", "You should see the Athletic Office at Pepperdine it's sooo big Ms. C..you wouldn't believe it" (oh, I bet I would), "So are you going to be here all winter break too?...you are always here Ms. C". "Wrestling at Stanford has been awesome, only problem is I'm out with an injury now and it sucks." "I really am enjoying Crew at Oregon State, who would have thought I'd be rowing on a crew team! My coach says' he can get me on a partial scholarship next year, isn't that cool!" "Hey Mrs. C...thanks for the Christmas candy!!"

Working in a high school you have to put things into perspective. Some days the kids can act mature beyond their years, some days they act like complete knotheads, they are easily bored, tired, any given day hate high school, love high school or think it's "lame"as mentioned above. These dropin visits are a reminder to me. When kids leave and come back to say hi it means alot. It's all about forming relationships with kids while they are here in high school, hoping to make it a positive experience for them. That's why I love what I do . . . for these post high school visits.

Happy Birthday to you!!

The BIG 53!! wooohooooo!! Doesn't anybody listen to me when I say look at the camera when I am taking your picture???

Off to Arizona . . .

Lucas stopped by for a visit today before traveling south with his Mom & Dad to see all his relatives in Phoenix. They are going to be sooo surprised at how much he has grown and everything he is doing now. We are happy he gets to spend time with his other Grandparents, I know they miss him alot! I'm sure Santa will be making stops here in Oregon too for their return.

Why not? . . . .

I was visiting with one of our coaches the other day when we started talking about things we did or didn't do when we were younger. He was telling me he never regrets getting a mohawk his senior year, his parents got really mad at him, his buddies made fun of him, but it was something he wanted so he did it. He said when you get to be an "adult" there are certain things you just aren't able to do like when you were a kid, because of expectations about adult behavior. As we were talking I told him how I wish when I was younger I had taken piano lessons. I'm sure if my parents had tried to get me to at the time I would have said,"forget that lame idea!". Now I regret it. I would love to know how to play the piano. So as I am telling him this he says, "So why don't you take piano lessons now?".. and I said, "well ....I'm too old"..and he says.."No your not, if you want to do it, you should do it. You don't have kids at home anymore taking up your time. You should do it!". Well....that's ridiculous..I can't.. not now..I am 50+ years old for cryminie sake! Well...the more I keep thinking about it the more I am thinking....well why not? So last week I started checking on people that provide piano lessons in the area. Found a couple...so who knows...maybe by this time next year I will be able to play Silent Night for the family. We'll see!

It's time for a girlie drink ! . . .

The holidays are a time for the fancy glasses and drinks, something other than beer and wine. My favorite cocktail this time of year is a pomegranate martini. It is very easy to make and I think it's delicious...aaahhh..it can be too delicious if you know what I mean. Here is my recipe give it a try!

Pomegranate Martini
1 1/2c. pomegranate juice (it's healthy for you!)
2 oz Absolute Citron vodka
1 c. ice
A bit of sparkling water (if you want)
squeeze of lime juice or lemon if you prefer

Shake and Shake and Shake (sing a Christmas song while you do it if you like), pour into chilled Martini glass.

Manners and courtesy are alive and well . . .

I left the house this morning at 9:00am and returned home at 6:30pm, to Christmas shop. I went to the Woodburn Outlet Mall (nearly every store), Fryes Electronics, Kohls, Joes and Joanns Fabrics. MY FEET HURT! What I am happy to report though is how absolutely courteous and friendly people were. From the shoppers, to the sales clerks, it made my day even better. I usually don't notice things like that too much, not unless people are being big _sses. It was just really nice to have the door held open when needed, have lots of thank you's and Merry Christmas's mentioned, just general interest in what I was buying and for who, and smiles lots of smiles. Even in the parking lots (where people can be big _sses) people were patient and didn't seem rushed to whip in front of you or after you, when leaving a space. I am quick to complain if people are idiots, I just want to make sure I give credit when they are being great....like today. I think it's that retail Christmas shopping spirit!

The happy tradition of tree cutting . . .

Each year we load up in the pickup and head up to Davids Hill to cut our Christmas tree. There are a number of tree farms in the area..this is "Forest" Grove you know. We get ours at Christmas Trees West and have since the boys were little. There has been all kinds of weather on the top of that hill over the years but this year the view was absolutely beautiful. Yesterday we could see Mt. St. Helens, Rainer, Hood, Adams and the tip of Jefferson while we were cutting away. I have gotten less fussy about picking the absolute perfect tree. Usually we are walking around for quite awhile (the boys can attest to that) before I find one that is exactly right. Well, this year we found a beauty within about the first 5-10 minutes. Dale and Andy couldn't believe it, so we load it up, get it home. Then it starts..."Mom, this tree is ugly."..."WHAT?"..."It's got big gaps in it...it looks ugly"..."Then why didn't you tell me that when we were getting ready to cut it down?"...."I think Dad and I were just glad you picked one so fast...we didn't really look at it that good"..."It doesn't look ugly! it will look just fine with all the lights and decorations on it, they will hide any gaps"...."I don't think so, I still think its ugly"....Suddenly, I feel a definate connection to Charlie Brown.

Kids can say the most random things . . .

Hey Mrs. C! "Isn't is weird how you can go into a public restroom, go to the bathroom and when you are done the toilet automatically flushes. Then you go to the sink to wash your hands and the water will automatically turn on....then you put your hands under the soap dispenser and it automatically shoots into your hand...then you walk to the wall and the air drier automatically comes on....Isn't that cool in a weird sorta way?" Uhhhhhh, well I suppose that is cool come to think of it. Hmmmm...the minds of our young people.....

A day at the mall . . . .

So Sunday I was on a mission . . . get started on some Christmas shopping. No matter how many new "trendy" malls pop up in the area, I seem to always gravitate to Washington Square. I don't know what it is about that mall, I guess it's just that they seem to have everything. The management has kept it updated and modern with new stores. They have done alot of work on putting in covered parking structures, valet parking, and package pickup areas. These are great when you get something big that you can just leave at the store while you shop around more. I guess I feel like I have been going to Washington Square forever. Actually after high school and before I went to college I worked in the stockroom at the JC Penney store prior to it's opening in the mall. Oh, do I have some stories from those days! A girlfriend and I went to work there together. We got the jobs with the help of my Dad who had a good friend that was the manager at the time. Our job was to unpack and ticket new merchandise as it entered the stockroom. Most of the time we would goof off and flirt with the cute guys that worked in the package pickup department or in the stockroom. One time there was this midnight boat ride on Lake Oswego......Oh my I am getting off track!! So I guess I feel kind of connected to that mall. I use to wheel the boys in their stroller on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, window shopping, buying them clothes, and occasionally stopping at McDonalds for lunch. That was the big weekend treat. Malls haven't changed much over the years. Except alot of teenagers hang out at the mall now. Girls to find boys and boys to find girls....we never did that?? We hung out at cool places like Tastee Freeze or A&W, or oh man . . . I am sounding like something out of a Grease movie! Anyway, back to shopping.....so I feel good I have at least gotten started and picked up a few things! Lot's of sales and lots of good Christmas music and decorations to put me in the mood!!

Beaver Nation has prevailed!

What a game!! Everybody thought it was going to be a dull and boring game to watch, but it made for some exciting football on a stormy Saturday afternoon in Eugene. Great final play in overtime by OSU to win at Autzen...finally!! Today I am going to walk the malls Christmas shopping to burn the gazillion calories I consumed yesterday. I'm sure the Beavers win had alot to do with their new fan who was intent on watching the game....shhhhhhh...don't bother me right now!!

I have also included a picture of next year's Heisman hopefuls!

WOW . . . .

Eddie VanHalen can play the guitar like no other. For 2 solid hours he played like a madman and made sounds arise from that guitar you wouldn't believe. They played everything you would have wanted to hear from the band and more. Eddie's guitar solo of Evolution brought the house down. We had awesome seats!! People of all ages were there, alot our age actually. The band members never showed their age during one second of the performance. David Lee Roth still the showman, jumped, turned, spunaround like he did 25 years ago! It was great! Now my ears just need to recover . .

Tonight's the night!

VanHalen Concert . . . Don't worry kids! I won't be throwing any grandma underwear on stage! Just lots of singing and dancing, it would completely embarrass you if you were there . . . . like it's going to embarrass your DAD!! PaaaNaaaMa...PaaNaaaMaaaaa....

Snow, Football, Chili...does it get any better?

We had our first bit of snow last night in the Grove and it was beautiful! Of course I was crossing my fingers for a "snow" day off school today, but it was all melted by this morning. They are predicting more on Saturday afternoon, which should add more drama to the events of the Civil War game in Eugene that day. I have my ingredients to begin my contribution to the smorgasboard of food. The last get together of the season for the "Beaver Nation Tailgaters", as we have so deemed ourselves. The guys are making one of those ducks, wrapped with chicken, wrapped in Turkey deals, plus a WHOLE bunch of other fabulous food is being made that day. My assignment is chili. I thought I would share my recipe, you can never have too many chili recipes! So here you go...

BEAVER BELIEVERS CHILI
(It's name for this weekend anyway)

I am multiplying this recipe X 3 for our get together

1 1/2 lbs hamburger
1/2 onion
1 14.5 oz. can diced stewed tomatoes
1 15 oz can tomato sauce
1 6oz. can tomato paste
1 15 oz can chili style beans - do not drain
1 30 oz can chili beans (ie. pinto, kidney whatever you like) - do not drain
4T worchestershire sauce
2 to 4T chili powder (depending on your taste)
V8 Hot & Spicy tomato juice (desired amount for consistency)
Brown hamburger and onion, drain fat. Combine all ingredients and bring to a boil, simmer for minimum of 1 1/2 hrs.
Top with shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onions, dolop of sour cream! Your good to go!!

Civil War preparedness Are You Ready?

Granted...this year is going to be a crapshoot. With both teams suffering from many injuries, the team that shows up to play hard on Saturday in spite of it all will win. At school this week I announced a "Civil War" door decorating contest. Those participating will decorate their classroom doors in the team that they support, or for the "non" Oregon fans, any college of their choice in the spirit of the game. Judging will take place on Friday with prizes awarded to the winners top 3 door designs. Sounds like we have alot of enthusiasm for the contest. Wishing the Beavers the best of luck on Saturday! A special kudos to Alexa Serna who has made kicking a great thing to watch at Oregon State! See you on Saturday Beaver Nation tailgaters!!

Total splurge. . .

Soooo it has happened.....like many thousands of American's we made the plunge on Black Friday and bought a Plasma TV. How could you pass up the prices for the one day only sale?..the sales of plasmas dove below their normal prices anywhere from $200 to $700. We probably really didn't need one (no we didn't), our current Sony big monster old school TV works just fine, but how could we resist. After spending time in Phoenix this summer with our son, who has a plasma the size of a football field on his wall, we couldn't believe how good the picture can be. Especially with the new HDTV channels. We bought a 42", it's not a monster that's good, it's perfect for our family room. So right now I am on our computer writing you as I hear my beloved cussing up a storm as he is unplugging all the hundreds of wires, cables, plugins, etc. etc. etc. in the back of the old unit to get ready for the new one. Uuuhhh...I think this may be why we don't buy new electronics very often..heehee. Oh, I am being called for assistance..wish me luck!

Could they be related? . . .

We rented the new Shrek 3 movie (yes, we have no small children anymore, but I rented it anyway). Here is what the movie made me think of - Shrek reminds me of Fred Flintstone. Matter of fact...I think he is a distant cousin of Fred. Fiona is a spinoff of Wilma, Donkey..of Barney, and the kids..who knows..since they just arrived we may see them become the images of Pebbles and BamBam. Does anybody else see this? I love Fred Flintstone and I love Shrek..so it's all good! Yaba-Daba-Doo!!!

Things to be thankful for . . . .

Top Ten things I am thankful for . . .

My husband, he's my friend, my confidant, my sole mate, my debater, my craftsman, my children's father and I will love him until the day I die.

My boys, they are all good hearted men, good father's, good husbands, loyal friends, and they are very caring son's to their Dad and I.

My mom and mother-in-law, that they are healthy, fun to be around and are still able to live independently and enjoy their lives to the fullest.

My daughters-in-law, I couldn't have asked for better wives for my son's, they are loving, spirited, fun and I see the love they have for my boys in their eyes! PLUS..they have given and will be giving me FABULOUS grandbabies!

My friends, you know who you are, the one's who are there via phone, get togethers, emails, they have been and continue to be an important part of the happiness in my life.

My crazy in-laws, you are what keep this family going, we have formed lasting traditions, seen each others kids grow and have a love for each other that runs as deep as blood relatives forever.

My brother & his family, though you live in another country, have another life that doesn't mesh much with ours, I feel sad that we aren't all closer, I am thankful that you are a part of my life, however much that may be.

A job that brings me joy each and everyday that I go to work.

My health (knock on wood), except for some old lady hot flashes, I think I'm doing pretty good!

Oh no...it's my last one...better make it good! The GREAT meal I'm gonna have tomorrow with the help of many of the above mentioned people in attendance!! woohooo!!

Project complete . . .

Always feels good to complete a project.

This weekend was a stormy one at the Oregon Coast. I went with my friends I paint with for a beach weekend getaway. Had a great time, lots of painting done and visiting by all. We took a break and headed over to the casino..where I won $45.00 on a $5.00 bet (not too bad). Also found a new seafood restaurant to try out that was great! Captain Ron's in Lincoln City, they have the same menu as the old Dory Cove Restaurant that burned down a couple of years ago. I had clam strips and their chowder was really good. We got quite a show with the storm that moved in on Saturday morning, it was fun to watch from the warmth of our rental house. We could paint away and watch the wind and waves crashing outside. We made a brief stop at the outlet mall on the way home to pick up some items Christmas gifts. Stopping on our drive home at Starbucks for one of their current holiday coffee drinks (I had an eggnog latte...yum!) Came home to a husband sprawled out on the couch who has the stomach flu.....oh great.......good thing I got my flu shot!

It's my turn . . .

Once a year I host bunco. Yes, the game I have spoken of in previous blog entries. Tomorrow is my night to host. So yesterday I went to Costco to pickup munchies, beer and wine. I have learned long ago that when you host bunco on a work night, it doesn't pay to try and make things from scratch to impress your friends, it's too much work. Costco has it all, I picked up a vegetable tray, garlic hummus, seafood spread, crackers, salsa, grapes, quacamole, crackers, tortilla chips, cookies, mini quiches, and of course nuts & candies for the tables. There will be 12 of us so it will be a nice crowd. Something I always struggle with when having a group over is what kind of wine to buy. I am not a wine drinker, it usually gives me an instant headache, so I am not really a good judge of wines. I feel bad that I don't like wine, seems all my friends do. Living in the mecca of wineries I should be taking full advantage of all the "award" winning wines of the local area. But about the only kind I can choke down in Pinot Grigio, and then like I said not many glasses & instant headache. Alot of my friends like Merlot, I can't get that stuff past my nose...I have tried to drink it but YUK! It's awful. So since I don't know much about wine I go down the aisle and get the wine that has a cool looking label (good as reason as any), and is under $8.00/bottle. In my cart are 2 bottles of Merlot , 1 bottle of Pinot Grigio, 1 bottle of Riesling and 1 bottle of Shiraz (what is a Shiraz anyway?) Oh, well they will drink it! The gals that drink beer like either Coors Light, Corona w/lime or Hefeweisen w/lemon. I think I'm ready, let's roll the dice!

Why I like to stay at my Grama & Grampas house..by Lucas

  • They talk funny to me.

  • They think it's cute when I poop, burp, sneeze, smile and suck on my fist.

  • I get to drink lots of milk.

  • When they change my diaper they fan my bare bottom, it feels good.

  • They sneak me banana baby food (I'm only suppose to have cereal).

  • It takes Grama along time to fix dinner for Grampa when I'm here, she likes talking to me.

  • They look at me when I am sleeping at night (they don't think I know)

  • Grampa blows on my belly.

  • I don't ever have to be put down, because they will hold me all the time.

  • If they don't pay attention to me I just spit up, that works...they come running.

  • We get to watch cartoons.

  • I get to sit in the kitchen sink on a big fluffy towel and get a bath.

  • They tell me funny stories about daddy when he was a baby.

  • My cheeks get kinda sore because they are kissing on them all the time.

I am happy when my Mommy & Daddy come and get me, Grama and Grampa are starting to look tired. They will have to rest up for the next time I come and stay!

Chad & Nic . . .

Happy Anniversary to you!...Here is the song that was played when Dad and I got married. It's for you this weekend! Wishing you many years together and many grandbabies for us! Love, Mom & Dad

Looking forward to next year already . . .

This is it.....the last OSU home football game. I have been cooking away and we are getting ready to pack up for our last tailgater of the season. Today's weather is ok so far, there may be a few showers later, but that's ok..we have had great weather all season. The menu for our game day extravaganza is beef brisket, armadillo eggs, bbq ribs, cheesey potatoes, and the usual huge assortments of salads and desserts. My contribution today is a couple big pans of chicken enchiladas, pumpkin bread and a cajun spice vegetable dip. As usual we will not be too worried about not enough food!! Now we just have to hope our team shows up, Canfield is out this game and Bernards is back in so we will have to see how this backup quarterback can handle himself. It is the Huskies and their record has been crappy this year, but anything can happen. Either way we will celebrate or drowned our sorrows at a fabulous tailgate feast! GO BEAVS!

Say thanks . . .

Each Friday before the Veterans Day Holiday at our high school an assembly to honor veterans is held. Veterans in our community from any war or conflict are invited to attend. We usually have nearly 100-150 show, all dressed in their military uniforms or some piece of uniform from their past or present. Alot of them are alumni of FGHS. It is always very well attended by community members, of all the yearly assemblies at school what impresses everyone the most are how the kids act. They are the first to rise and applaud, be quiet when appropriate, give standing ovations where it seems necessary and listen to the speaker that has been invited to address the veterans and the student body. All the various military organizations are represented Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, etc. Our high school band plays impressive renditions of all the branches "theme" songs I guess you would call them. Students hear stories of battles or heroism and they really get a sense of the sacrifice made by these ladies and gentlemen. One specific speaker that came to address the school a couple years ago was Brigadier General James Sehorn. A former FGHS graduate who served in Vietnam and was held in a POW camp for a number of years before his release. His family lived across the street from us until his return home in the early 70's. I use to babysit his two daughters. He shared stories of his unwaivered love of his country, comrades and family, which helped to get him through the darkest days of his imprisonment. You could have heard a pin drop in our gym of 1750 students listening to his every word. Alot of foreign countries and unfortunately ignorant Americans choose to bad mouth our politics and way of life. All you need to do is listen to a Veteran speak and you gain a whole new respect for what we have as Americans. Each year that ceremony gets me choked up and I'm sure tomorrow will be no different. So all of you who appreciate your freedoms, let's do the old fashion thing, with a look in the eye and a strong steady handshake..thank a Veteran this weekend!

What are you doing???

I am plopped in the front room on the couch watching one of my fav shows. Dale is in the family room watching Monday Night Football (of course). This is how "old" people survive..one watches what they like in one room and the other in the other room. What did people do in the old days with only one TV?? It's impossible here. Anyway I am listening to my show and I keep hearing noises in the other room. I keep ignoring it until finally I get up out of my comfy chair and go to the family room. Here is what I see.....Dale reclined in the chair, Monday night football on the TV (blarring of course since he can't hear so well), and on his chest is the portable DVD player and he's watching Bonanza!!!?? What are you doing??? I say, "Well, sometimes the game gets boring".."well, then why don't you just change the channel, I ask", " Because I might miss something."...OH Brother!!! So back to the other room I go..shaking my head..watching my show..you know the one..Dr. 90210. Tonight I am watching as Dr. Rey does a facelift and tummy tuck on some Hollywood lady..can't miss that...may need to see him one day...ha! Oh no..here comes Dale asking me what I'm watching . . .

Let the Bazaars begin!

I love going to Christmas bazaars. Probably every weekend from now until Christmas I will try to slip in to a school bazaar, church bazaar or a big one like the one I attended today in Portland. It is the Holiday Food and Gift bazaar at the Oregon Convention Center. I am starting my gift hunts for various friends and family members. In our family we also have alot of birthday celebrations in December...so it's sort of double the gift giving that month. I really like checking out the new things people are crafting. I guess at heart I am an "artsy fartsy" person. I love things that have taken someones personal time and creativity to make. I always like looking at the jewelry, wool purses, soaps, tolepainted items, landscape photography prints, and of course Santa's .... being a bit of a santa collector. I have one rule though...as with all of my paint lady friends we are sworn to..."Never buy anything with wiggly eyes"...that is our secret code for a bad bazaar. "Oh, don't go to that bazaar, they have lots of wiggly eye things". That basically means they have alot of crap, cheap stuff, junk, pipecleaners, wholesale storebought made in China items..NOT handmade...don't bother. People that make creatures out of walnuts need therapy...sorry but true. Anyway, I did get some good stuff today, so now they will get put away for Christmas. A future blog entry will have to be about riding the Tri-Met Max train into Portland...oh my...very entertaining.

Nothing like waiting in line for sausage!

Well . . . the whole fan-damily made it this year to the Verboort Sausage dinner! Grama Howson, Grama Christopherson, Chad, Nicole, Lucas, Andy, Alia, Josh, Dani, Dale and I. It's a time honored tradition in our family to either buy or go to the Verboort dinner. Not everybody is always around to go, sometimes it falls during hunting season. So those years I usually rise at the crack of dawn to stand in line to buy sausage. It was perfect weather this year for mulling around outside at the plant sale, then into the bazaar. We ran into alot of friends we haven't seen for awhile plus, both of the grannys came so that was great! (Oh, me too I'm a granny!). We bought our tickets and had to wait 2 hours before our numbers were called, so what did we do for 2 hours....Well, we got on the school bus that takes you out to the beer gardens, a couple miles out of town at the Gun Club. The weather was so great that we all sat around a picnic table, enjoying the scenery and visited while having a couple beers. We teased the granny's about the last time they rode a school bus....they said it had been awhile ;0). So we get back and thanks to Andy and Alia who stayed back at the church and babysat Lucas for while, we get into line for dinner. Table for 10 by the aisle (for we have a stroller now, of course). We get seated and in they march with plates heaped with all you can eat homemade sauerkraut, mashed potatoes w/gravy, sausage, applesauce, green beans and rolls. For dessert lemon merange or apple pies. Even baby Lucas got a taste of applesauce and Danielle who has been feeling pretty bad lately with morning sickness was able to get some food down too! We all went home stuffed and having enjoyed our day....then home to watch the Duck & Beaver games. Doesn't get much better than that on a beautiful fall afternoon . . .

Friday Night is Pizza Night!

Even though we have no kids at home anymore we still can't get away from Friday Night Pizza Night. I know it's bad for us..we should be cutting back, but geezzz..why? So it's time to make the big decision...what kind?? Well I like pepperoni, italian sausage, mushroom, onions and olives. Hubby HATES olives so we have to compromise, so it's half/half. If we go out for pizza we also usually order from the salad bar...because salad is healthy for you and it will somehow offset the 3 pieces of pizza I will eat tonight ....right? oh and then there is the pitcher of beer too..oops...We are not the only Friday Night pizza people!! There are alot of us!...so will I see you tonight?

Got the wrong kind...DARN!

Since I am "older" now I made an appt. at our local Safeway pharmacy on Weds. and got my flu shot. I've never had one before, usually never get the flu, but I thought well...maybe it's time. So of course now my arm is aching sore and I feel kind of yucky...hope it doesn't last long. Guess I should have read this ad before going to Safeway...damn..

Trick or Treat . . .

Tomorrow's the big day...the day kids go on a sugar overload! I am guilty ..I take candy into school on Halloween and have it on my desk for the kids to stop by and pickup. The only rule is they have to say "Trick or Treat". I feel bad for high school kids, they get a bad rap on this holiday. They are so excited when they come in the office and are like "WOW, Ms. C you have candy!!, Can I have some?"... "Sure, you can have one, after you say trick or treat"..."TRICK OR TREAT!" they grab one and off they go. You see in their eyes they are like little kids again and not the older ones that don't get to go out anymore.

The secretaries in our building usually dress up every year. Some years we all coordinate so we look alike, other years we are on our own, that's this year . So I have decided this year I am dressing like a hunter. Since hubby just got home all of his stuff is laying around, so I am going to put it to use for another day. OF COURSE..no guns on campus, no knives, no bow/arrow, no good stuff that hunters use. SO what's a hunter to do?? I will just get all suited up, have my bright vest on, my fanny pack, binoculars, holster, elk call, it's all good. I should look real good next to my boss who is going to dress like Sponge Bob don't you think?? haha!! Happy Halloween! ps. I got my halloween board done too!

Perfect Day . . . .except for the birds

Today is a perfect day...it's really sunny outside, crispy cold and the leaves have begun to fall. I am sitting on the couch with all of my back issues of Better Home's & Garden's magazines cutting out recipes and watching old horror movies.

Just waiting for the mighty hunter to return home today after a week at Elk camp (hopefully after a successful hunt).

I really enjoy watching the older horror movies. With Halloween next Wednesday it seems this is the only time of year that you can see some really good films. The Vincent Price & Bela Lugosi vampire movies are my favorites, and of course Psycho & The Birds. I watched this one today called "The Vault of Horror" oh my gosh..it was a major "B" movie from the 70's...the blood even looked like KoolAid!! Some of the newer scary movies are good, but they are VERY scary to me (ie. The Ring, The Grudge)..not like the older ones. I usually can't watch any of them alone..they freak me out too much. Don't like any of the bloody movies either, but the suspenseful ones keep my attention. Sometimes I'm peeking through my hands that are over my face most of the time. Why do we do this to ourselves?? It's really stupid when you think about it, we want to watch it, but it scares the bee-jesus out of us??!! This website is about watching scary movies..perhaps it can help you too....http://www.horrormoviesurvivalguide.com/

Treats .... it's what we do best!

When you work in an office you celebrate birthdays. A couple times a month we celebrate various birthdays by bringing homemade goodies into work. I have done this for as long as I have been working .... like almost 100 years now ....it feels like. I know some of the best recipes I have accumulated over the years have been from different people that I have worked with. Actually if I counted up all the dozens of cookies I've brought in or desserts I've whipped up...the calories would be in the bazillions! When the boys still lived at home and hubby still says it, "I suppose you are having a birthday at work again, since you never make that stuff for us." That answer is "correct" I say. "This stuff is bad for you. You don't need to be eating sweets". They would walk off...grumpy..with the "that's not fair" look. When I grew up Mom didn't make sweets because my brother was a diabetic. So, I never really knew what I was missing I guess. Since I've been married and started a family, I still rarely make desserts or sweets for us. Plus, they really aren't all that good for you. I suppose if I want my sweet tooth satisfied I just wait for an office birthday party and a new recipe. Here is a good one I've brought in for the chocolate lovers in your office:

Amazing Chocolate Expresso Surprise
1 18.24oz box chocolate cake mix
1 3oz package instant chocolate pudding mix
1 1/4c. sour cream
1 6oz c. vanilla bean yogurt
1c. butter, softened
5 eggs
1T instant coffee crystals
1t almond extract (optional)
5 - 1.55oz milk chocolate candy bars, broken into pieces
Powdered sugar
Tillamook Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 10-inch bundt pan. In a large bowl, sitr together cake mix and pudding mix. Make a well in the center and pour in sour cream and yogurt, softened butter, eggs, coffee crystals and almond extract. Beat 3 minutes on medium speed. Add broken pieces of milk chocolate bar and stir. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 50 to 55 minutes. Let cool and turn onto a wire rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. AND THE BEST PART! Serve with Tillamook Vanilla Bean Ice Cream!!! 16 servings

The Best . . .

I don't know who has been developing the marketing campaign for the Kaiser Permanente Health System, but their latest commercials have been very innovative and they make you think. This is their most recent commercial and it is one of my all time favorite commercials! I love this kid!

Is it hot in here or is it just me?

OK....so what does it mean when it's 56 degrees outside, I am in the car, and I have rolled all the windows down, and I still have to turn the air conditioning on full blast because I have broken into a full on sweat! Uh oh, this has been happening quite a bit here lately. I will be sitting at my desk at school and all of a sudden...oh gawd...here we go...tropical vacation heatwave approaching...gotta take a walk...gotta go outside...gotta get some cool air..need a fan...a big fan..where is a damn fan!! Oh..it's better now..it's gone away..for now but it will return..just like it does everyday and in the night lately too. I tried the Black Cohosh (by recommendation of a friend)...doesn't work....then there is Hormone Therapy.. kinda scary not sure if I want to go there cancer warnings and all...geeezzzzz, what's an old gal to do?? Just stick it out and drive everyone around here crazy by keeping the thermostats down. One website recommends putting your bra in the freezer to help cool your temperature...WHAT?!! probably some guy said that!...Like that would be comfortable. Hubby says," I thought hot flashes were suppose to be good things?"...ha...WELL THEN YOU HAVE THEM!! Only kidding honey, Can we go on a cruise to Alaska?? Like maybe this weekend??

On the floor with Eddie!

What a great birthday! Thanks to Jeff! for the Kohl's giftcard and birthday card, Thanks to Mom for the shirt and jacket, Thanks to Brian, Grace and the kids for the first ecard of the day! Thanks to my boss Doug for a gift certificate for a massage! and to Sue for the OSU Beavers rain poncho!!! woo hoo! Hey and thanks to my dentist and Macy's for my computerized birthday postcard (they brought a tear to my eye) it was sooo personalized..haha. I do have to say the biggest birthday surprise was from the kids and Dale!!
Don't be calling me on December 1st at 8:00pm because I will be ON THE FLOOR, ROW 23 singing and dancing at the VANHALEN concert at the Rose Garden!!
SOLD OUT concert I might add. The last concert I went to was Elton John about 9 years ago and I was in the nosebleed seats. My husband already tells me he is wearing his earplugs, poor man, he will be missing the whole experience. I will be rocking the night away and forgetting that I am fifty __ for a few hours anyway!. When I opened the envelope the other night with the tickets in them I took this picture of Lucas....I guess he is a KISS fan!

Good for a laugh . .and a thought . .

I'm really NOT a political type...but this one is rather entertaining

WHAT A GAME!!

BEAVS 31 CAL 28

Not already . . .

I made a little shopping trip into Kohl's on Friday. It's a really nice store, similar to Mervyn's or Lamont's I guess. As I was browsing through the store I wandered back to the department where you buy towels, sheets, that kind of stuff. As I am wandering around I am hearing the faint sound of music...I follow the sound....only to be directed into a HUGE Christmas display!! There they are trees, lights, ornaments, home decor, Christmas villages (the music was from a village whose ice rink plays Christmas carols)...arrrghhhhhh!!! I was actually starting to get stressed out just hearing the music. Whatever happened to Christmas sales after Thanksgiving...oh yeah..right...that was the old days..hummppfff bah humbug.

Bruce evades the paparrazi . . . .

Today in our local newspaper there is an advertisement for a pet photo contest. The contest is being sponsored by the new Coastal Farm & Ranch store in town. Categories are divided into the following - Cutest Cat, Most-Dashing Dog, Most-handsome Horse, and other furred, feathered or finned friends. One winner is selected in each category and each will receive a $100 gift certificate to none other than Coastal Farm & Ranch stores. I usually ignore these ads in the paper but this time I have a good one. It's not our cat (camera shy), koi fish or turtles...no, it's our son's dog Bruce. I just have to send in this photo...I hope it's a winner. You also have to submit with the photo a caption that reads: Loves to ...(eight words or less)
So here is my submission: Loves to be the life of the party! ....Wish us luck!!

To Western Oregon U it is . . .

Parent's weekend at Western Oregon University is this weekend. We missed it last year (sorry Andy) because there was an Oregon State home football game. So we went to the game instead of our son's freshman year at WOU Parent's Weekend. He likes to remind us where our priorities are....watching OSU football vs. visiting him at school. Well, this year he is our number one priority (because OSU football is away)...Yeah Andy!! We love you!! We are coming to see you!! Well, not we.....ME. Dad flies off to Phoenix this weekend to help with the big move north for Chad, Nicole & Lucas. So MOM yes MOM is coming to the wonderful town of Monmouth! We get to hang out, go to a WOU football game & casino night on Saturday! woohooo!! Hey should we enter the mother/son lookalike contest?? So what's this table tennis game I should have been in training for?? You didn't tell me what I needed to do to prepare for this competition?? Ping Pong right?

A Classic. . . .

"Our" song....the one I had with my first boyfriend in 6th grade...it still gives me goosebumps when I hear it. I know it's a girl thing! I'd hear this song and believe we would never break up. Boy, to be so unaware of what was to come in the future. So Garth (yes, his name was Garth) wherever you are here's to holding your sweaty hand walking home from Camelot Elementary School. Remember when you would give my brother Phil pieces of candy so he wouldn't tell my Mom & Dad that we were holding hands. He would be giggling as he walked behind us threatening to tell our secret. I haven't thought about that in years....PS. I have since moved on....

Help Save Oregon Wrestling . . .

On November 19, 7:00pm the University of Oregon will be hosting the NWCA All-Star Wrestling Classic. This event is a dual meet, where top ranked college wrestlers in each of the 10 weight classes compete as an exhibition.
“We’re fighting to reverse the decision made by the University of Oregon and we feel showcasing how great the sport of wrestling is and showcasing the demand for wrestling at the University of Oregon,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “Wrestling in Oregon is very strong, it always has been,” said NWCA President Ron Mirkitani. “We want to create a groundswell of support and continue the momentum. By having this event early in the season and hosting it at Oregon can show wrestling belongs at the school.”
100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the
"Save Oregon Wrestling" campaign.

Cleavage crisis!

I knew that headline would get your attention. Mothers of America! and Fathers for that mattter...please!...do not send your daughters off to high school with half of their boobs hanging out of their shirts. There I have said it! I never had girls, I did have boys and yes at times their jeans were baggy and hanging low during whatever "fashion faze" was happening, but the most you could ever see was the brand name of their boxers. I guess I should thank god they were always wearing boxers...as alot of these girls with the tiny tops aren't even wearing bras. How can girls expect to be taken seriously with half of their chests hanging out of their shirts. I hear the boys under their breathes and the girls face is NOT the first part of their anatomy that is being viewed....ever. So it begins . . . the "female" staff member refers them to the office, because too much cleavage is a dress code violation. The male teachers are not allowed to send them directly to the office, they have to refer the students name to a female administrator because if the male teacher made the referral that would mean that HE WAS LOOKING.....like ddduuuuhhhhhh!! Lawsuit happy parents might have an issue with that....oh brother. What do you expect when it is hanging out there and the teacher is a male. It's goes back to genetics! If your daughter is over 18 and wants to show off her chest..fine..whatever, I still think the reaction by males is the same, but geezz when they are 15, 16, 17 show some restraint. I'm positive my mom would have never let me leave the house the way these girls leave the house now. I have no problem walking up to them and saying, "Your shirt is way too low", and most of the time they will be very embarrassed, and either try to pull it up or get a sweatshirt from a friend, some are sent home to change. So come on Mothers of America...cover up your daughters cleavage, please, it's embarrassing.

Bring on the rain . . .

Some like summer, some like winter, some like spring....I love Fall. I like it when after months of being in the sun attempting to stay cool in the warm weather I can put on a sweater again. I like that I can wear sweatshirts and layers of clothing, I've missed that. My coats and jackets are being revisited again this month. I like that I can order a pumpkin spice or gingerbread latte, just because it's October and it just tastes better in October (ps. note how I haven't quite cut back yet..oops). I enjoy the changing color of the leaves. Have you ever really stopped to notice that? This begins the start of nesting inside the house for the next few months, in front of a fire in the fireplace, curled up on the couch snuggled up in an afghan reading or watching TV. This is beef stew, chili and cornbread weather. It's my birthday month, it's high school homecoming, it's halloween, it's time for a mammogram (oh geezzzz..not that again), well it is October!
